LST, Topping, and SCROG: Three Ways to Shape a Better Canopy

Indoor growers are always working with one major limitation:

space.

Plants naturally want to grow upward toward the light, but indoor growing is usually more efficient when that growth is spread across a wider, more even canopy.

That is where plant training comes in.

Three of the most common techniques are:

  • Low-Stress Training, or LST

  • Topping

  • SCROG, or Screen of Green

They all have the same general goal:


Help the plant use the available space and light more efficiently.

But they accomplish that in different ways.


Why Train a Plant at All?

If a cannabis plant is left completely alone, it will often develop one dominant main stem with smaller branches growing below it.

That structure makes sense outdoors, where the plant has open space and sunlight moves across the sky throughout the day.

Indoor lighting is different.

The fixture usually stays directly above the plant.

That means the tallest branches receive the strongest light while shorter branches underneath may receive much less.

Plant training helps create a flatter canopy so more branches can occupy the strongest part of the light footprint.

Instead of one dominant top, the grower can create several productive growing points.


What Is Low-Stress Training?

Low-Stress Training is exactly what the name suggests.

Instead of cutting the plant, the grower gently bends and positions branches.

A branch may be pulled outward and secured so it grows more horizontally instead of straight upward.

Once the dominant stem is moved away from the highest point, other branches begin competing for that position.

The result can be a wider plant with several strong tops.


Why Growers Use LST

LST is popular because it allows the grower to shape the plant without removing the main growing tip.

It can be especially useful in spaces where height is limited.

By spreading branches sideways, more of the available floor space can be used while keeping the canopy lower.

It also gives the grower a lot of control over the final shape of the plant.

Small adjustments over time can create a very even structure.


LST Takes Time

Low-stress does not mean no-stress.

Branches still need to be handled carefully.

Young, flexible growth is usually easier to position than older, woody branches.

The plant also continues growing after every adjustment, so training is not necessarily something you do once and forget about.

As branches turn upward again, they may need to be repositioned.

The process is gradual.


What Is Topping?

Topping is a different approach.

Instead of simply bending the main stem, the grower removes the active growing tip.

The plant then redirects growth into branches below the cut.

Instead of one dominant main top, the plant can develop two or more strong branches.

This changes the plant's structure early and encourages a bushier growth pattern.


Why Topping Works

Cannabis naturally exhibits something called apical dominance.

In simple terms, the highest growing tip tends to receive priority.

When that tip is removed, other branches begin competing to become dominant.

That can create a more balanced plant.

Topping is often used as the beginning of a larger training strategy.

A grower may top the plant first and then use LST to spread the new branches outward.

The techniques do not have to be used separately.


Give the Plant Time to Recover

Unlike LST, topping involves physically cutting the plant.

That means it creates a temporary stress.

A healthy plant usually responds well, but timing matters.

A very small, unhealthy, or already stressed plant may not be the best candidate for additional stress.

Training should work with the plant's health, not against it.

The goal is improved structure, not simply performing a technique because someone online said it should be done on a certain day.


What Is SCROG?

SCROG stands for Screen of Green.

Instead of allowing branches to grow freely upward, a screen or net is installed above the plants.

As branches reach the screen, they are guided across it.

The grower gradually fills the available area with multiple growing tips.

The goal is to create a broad, relatively flat canopy.

Once the screen is filled appropriately, the branches can grow upward into flowering.


Why SCROG Can Be So Effective

A SCROG can be especially useful when a grower wants to maximize a small space with fewer plants.

Instead of several narrow plants reaching upward, one or a few plants can be trained across a larger area.

This puts more growing tips at a similar distance from the light.

The light can then be used much more evenly.

A well-managed SCROG is less about forcing the plant into a net and more about controlling how the canopy fills the space.


SCROG Requires Planning

SCROG is not always the easiest method if plants need to be moved around frequently.

Once branches are woven or positioned through the screen, removing individual plants can become difficult.

That means watering access, airflow, equipment placement, and general maintenance should be considered before the screen fills in.

The technique can be very effective, but it works best when the grower thinks ahead.


Which Method Is Best?

There is no single best training technique.

The right choice depends on the grow.

LST may make sense for someone who wants maximum flexibility.

Topping may be useful for creating several strong branches early.

SCROG may be ideal for filling a limited footprint with an even canopy.

Many growers combine techniques.

A plant might be topped first, trained outward with LST, and eventually spread beneath a SCROG net.

The important thing is understanding the purpose behind each technique.


Training Is About Light Management

It is easy to think of plant training as simply manipulating branches.

But the bigger goal is really light management.

Indoor growers are paying for every watt coming from the fixture.

If most of that light is hitting only a few tall branches while the rest of the plant sits underneath them, the available energy is not being used efficiently.

A flatter canopy can allow more flowering sites to receive similar light intensity.

That can make better use of the equipment already in the grow space.


Don't Forget Airflow

A completely packed canopy is not automatically a good canopy.

Plants still need air movement.

Branches and leaves that become tightly crowded can create areas of stagnant air.

Training should improve the structure of the plant without creating an impossible wall of foliage.

Good canopy management considers both light and airflow.


Let the Space Determine the Strategy

A grower in a tall room may manage plants differently from someone working inside a short tent.

A 2×2 tent may require a completely different strategy than a 4×4.

Container size, number of plants, light coverage, genetics, and available height all affect the decision.

That is why copying another grower's exact training routine does not always produce the same result.

The technique should fit the environment.


The Bigger Lesson

LST, topping, and SCROG are not tricks that automatically create bigger harvests.

They are tools.

Their purpose is to help the grower control plant structure and use the available space more efficiently.

The fundamentals still matter:

Healthy roots.

A stable environment.

Proper watering.

Appropriate lighting.

Good airflow.

Training works best when those fundamentals are already in place.

Instead of asking, “Which technique produces the biggest plant?” a better question is:

“Which technique helps this plant fit this particular space?”
